The men, women
and children who come through our doors have many physical needs—nutritious
food, safe shelter, clean clothing. But their spirits are longing for compassion.
It may have been
days, weeks, even months since someone offered them a smile or kind word,
looked at them with anything but disgust or contempt, or showed even a hint of empathy for their
circumstances. Here at Union
Mission of Roanoke Rapids, we can give them the grace and mercy they deserve as
God’s children—because you’ve joined hands with us to give them hope.

couldn’t be more important than it is right now.
Although the
dismal state of our area’s economy is becoming old news, the exact statistics
are still alarming. At over 12
percent, the unemployment rate in Halifax County is double what it was 10 years
ago, and over 20 percent of our neighbors in Northampton County live below the
poverty line. Here at the Mission,
we see the faces behind those numbers every day . . . and we call them by name.
Tom lost his livelihood—then everything he loved—and misguidedly
turned to alcohol to numb his pain. He’s a student in our long-term recovery program . . . he’s working hard
to rebuild his life. And he’s
accepted the Lord as his only real and lasting comfort.
Janice’s husband lost his
job—and the family
can barely survive on her part-time income. When they’re forced to choose between feeding the kids or
paying the rent, she knows her family is welcome to share meals with us at the
Mission or request a monthly food box.
Sara’s a single mom—with three school-age youngsters who
outgrow their winter clothes by the time summer ends. Before classes begin, she brings them to our clothing stores
for gently used and affordable jeans, coats and shoes.
Tom, Janice and
Sara are our neighbors—and Christ calls us to bear their burdens as if they
were are own. Please join hands
